Right, let’s talk about supplements.
Did you know that Centrum Vitamins is a product produced by the company Pfizer, one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world with $43 billion in revenue per year.
Holy Smokes. The nutritional supplement category for them is one of the fastest growing sectors of their business.
Centrum has massive sampling programs. What this means is that they have the same access to doctors offices as pharmaceutical sales reps and GP’s literally get boxes of samples to dish out to their patients. It’s no wonder that it is the most recommended supplement by doctors.
Is it the best multi-vitamin available on the market? Definitely not.
Is it worth taking? Hell no.
When I saw that X’Ray image below, I was gobsmacked. Centrum tablets are quite literally packed so tightly with fillers and binders that they cannot be broken down by the body and pass out whole the other end for many people.
Sewage treatment plants are reporting that they remove TONS of undissolved vitamins from their treatment ponds every year. Literally money down the drain and many broken septic systems reported believe it or not.
Synthetic vitamins and minerals are notorious for giving us bright yellow wee but the problem isn’t so much that they dissolve, it’s whether the body can readily absorb them.
We are what we absorb.
FYI- If you love to geek out on science, you can test your pressed tablet vitamins at home by placing them in a water and vinegar solution to mimic the acid in your stomach. If they haven’t broken down in 30 minutes, they ain’t breaking down in your body either.
The form of nutrients that are provided in Centrum are the cheapest and the least absorbable forms.
The dosages of most of the nutrients in Centrum are negligible and not even close to therapeutic levels that afford us some kind of benefit……. but what does that matter when they actually aren’t being absorbed.
We’ve all heard that “One A Day” marketing ploy right??
Here’s the thing: Water-soluble nutrients such as vitamin C and the B-vitamins are either used or excreted within about 4 hours. We need to keep the body topped up throughout the day. A one-a-day multi is completely useless and a sure fire sign that it is of poor quality.
“One-a-day” multi-vitamins are a marketing-made myth!
This is why doTerra’s Lifelong Vitality Supplements are designed to be taken twice a day. I’ve had some people freak out at the idea of taking supplements multiple times in a day but it’s for a really good reason, just know that.
Multi-vitamins are meant to provide nutrients our diets might be lacking and we want them to mimic food in it’s natural state as closely as possible. This is what our body receives with ease and utilises properly.
Do these ingredients sound like whole food ingredients to you-
Talc: Aka Talcum Powder is used as a filler and has been implicated with increased risk of cancer.
BHT: Butylated hydroxyanisole has been shown to be toxic to the liver, thyroid, kidney, lungs, and affects blood coagulation. BHT can also act as a tumour promoter. Awesome.
Colour Yellow 6 Lake: Why is there food colouring in a health supplement?? Also known as tartrazine or Yellow #6, this chemical is banned in some European countries. Side effects of ingestion can include gastric upset, diarrhoea, vomiting, swelling of the skin (angioedema) and migraines, it’s also linked to hyperactivity in young children. Stay well away.
Colour Red 40 Lake: Has been linked directly to hyperactivity in children, immune-system tumors in animal studies, severe allergic reactions ranging from hives and swelling, to anaphylactic shock and cancer.
Crospovidone: Used as a binder. There is an abundance of documented cases of serious allergenic response.
Sodium Aluminosilicate: Used as a food additive for its anti caking effect. Linked to Alzheimers and nerve damage, bone diseases, kidney damage, neurotoxicity.
There are actually more “non-active” ingredients in Centrum than actual vitamins and minerals. Craziness. In the Centrum Kids products, the additives far exceed the adult Centrum products……..
Now let’s just talk for a second about RDI levels ok.
The RDI is the daily intake level of a nutrient that back in 1968 was considered to be sufficient to meet the requirements of 97–98% of healthy individuals in every demographic in the United States.
How they came to this conclusion is anyone’s guess, but the reality is that our health has only declined since these numbers were presented. Since 1968, we have introduced thousands more chemicals into our environment, our soil has continually become depleted, our food supply has been adulterated with glyphosate and we’ve become sicker.
We also need to remember that a supplement label may state that it contains 250% of the recommended daily intake of Calcium for example BUT, unless it’s in a form that can be absorbed it’s rendered useless.
Our bodies are crying out for nourishment, not in the form of calories but in nutritional density. So many of us are malnourished yet we don’t even know it. A supplement helps us to fill in those gaps and provide us with a nutritional baseline we can then build upon with our healthy diet.
The argument of “I eat healthy, therefore I don’t need a supplement” is false and unachievable for most people no matter whether they eat a healthy diet or not.
The same goes for the line of thinking that taking a supplement will make up for a crappy diet.
Remember, just because we aren’t sick doesn’t mean we are healthy yet it’s so easy to fall in the trap of believing that all is well. We’ve forgotten how good we are supposed to feel.
That’s why I am a firm believer in supplementation.
I would dearly love you to try them for yourself and given you actually have nothing to loose, why wouldn’t you?!
