Nascent Iodine 30ml by Enviromedica
Product Description
Traditionally, the importance of iodine to the biological function of the body was focused on iodine’s role in the nourishment of the thyroid gland, particularly for the production of T3 and T4 hormones and the regulation of metabolism.
As the understanding of this nutrient has progressed, we come to understand the role of iodine in the body far surpasses what most thought—it is not only necessary for over health, but a crucial component of detoxification process, metabolism regulation and immune system activity.
To quote Dr David Brownstein “Iodine is the most misunderstood nutrient. After 17 years of practicing medicine, I can say that it is impossible to achieve your optimal health if you do not have adequate iodine levels. I have yet to see any item that is more important to promoting health or optimizing the function of the immune system than iodine.”
All the cells in your body contain and make use of iodine. It is concentrated in the glandular system of your body, with your thyroid containing the highest amount compared to any other organ. Significant amounts are also stockpiled in numerous other areas of the body including the salivary glands, cerebrospinal fluid and the brain, gastric mucosa, choroid plexus, breasts, and ovaries.
Ensuring sufficient iodine levels during preconception and pregnancy is incredibly important not only for the health of mum but also for the cognitive/ neurological development and thyroid development of baby.
In a Queen’s University study published in 1993, 74 percent of women treated with iodine over two years had significant clinical improvement of fibrocystic breast disease. As far back as 1966, Russian researchers showed that iodine effectively relieves signs and symptoms of fibrocystic breast disease. Seventy-one percent of 167 women suffering from fibrocystic disease experienced a beneficial healing effect when treated with iodine. Iodine reduced breast tenderness, nodularity, fibrosis, turgidity and number of macrocysts compared to controls.
Australians are almost universally deficient in iodine thanks to depleted soils. 50% of all Australian women of childbearing age are thought to be iodine deficient which indicates just how little attention iodine intake gets.
We know that iodine is good for the thyroid, but we also know that those who have developed autoimmune thyroid disease can actually get worse with iodine supplementation. The recommended daily intake of iodine is 150mcg for non pregnant individuals and 250mcg for women during preconception, pregnancy and breastfeeding.
This paper suggests that levels of up to 300 mcg are generally safe in thyroid autoimmune disease, and even if they do cause a increase in thyroid antibody levels it is usually short lived. If you have either Hashimoto’s or Graves, please start low and go slow. 1 drop every other day is likely going to be all you can tolerate to begin with.
“The recommended iodine intake is therefore safe with regard to thyroid autoimmunity, the benefits largely outweighing the risks in a population with a stable median iodine concentration not exceeding 300 μg/L. Thus, a possible increase in thyroid autoimmunity should not represent a limitation to promoting iodine supplementation in the general population, also taking into account the steady rise in prevalence of autoimmune disorders which has occurred in the last few decades because of environmental factors other than iodine.

The Iodine Speed Test / Iodine Patch Test
This is a simple test that can be used by anyone to determine if they may be iodine deficient.
- Apply iodine in a circular area that is about the size of a silver dollar (2 inches) on the abdomen or inside of the upper arm and allow it to completely dry.
- Check to see if it disappears within 12 hours.
If the iodine disappears within 12 hours, then the person may be iodine deficient and vice versa, if the patch remains post 12 hours then levels are likely sufficient. This test works due to the fact that the skin absorbs iodine at the rate at which it is needed. Whenever a person is ill or under extreme stress, absorption rates can increase by 5 times, the evaporation of iodine from the skin also increases with increased ambient temperatures and decreased atmospheric pressure. Something to keep in mind when patch testing.
Most will find that it is important to build up gradually in order to experience the least amount of detoxification symptoms. This is especially important for those with Autoimmune Thyroiditis, Iodine supplementation may not be right for you, please check with your practitioner.
