The practice of using pearl powder is around 1500 years old. It has been used in many cultures around the world, but it’s highly valued in traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic practices.
Pearl has a reputation as a beauty tonic, known to help prevent freckles and dark patches on the skin during ageing process. It can also stimulate Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, supporting the body against the harmful effects of oxidative stress.
Organic pearl powder contains many trace minerals including calcium in a highly bio available form, magnesium, zinc, iron, strontium, copper, selenium, silicon and more. It also contains many amino acids. Pearl powder may participate in DNA and RNA metabolic activities, which can support cell renewal. It also contains mucopolysaccharides, which have shown to prevent wrinkling and to increase libido in men and women.
The applications of pearl powder, specifically nano scale include accelerating wound healing, bone repair, skin regeneration, tooth remineralization, tissue regeneration, aid in the reduction of fever and febrile, improve eye sight, calm the nerves and ease insomnia amongst many others. It has an excellent safety profile for young and old.
“In terms of pharmacology, pearls have many effects such as calming, improving cognitive ability, being anti-epileptic, promoting bone growth and regeneration, promoting the proliferation and migration of human microvascular endothelial cells, protecting the heart, anti-hemolysis, and anti-oxidation. In terms of toxicology, pearls are safe to take for a long time without exerting obvious adverse reactions. In terms of clinical application, pearls have been used to treat many diseases and conditions, such as convulsions, epilepsy, palpitations, eye diseases, ulcer diseases, skin diseases, or skin lesions.” – PMID: 36081944
Pearl is also known to be a Shen stabiliser in Chinese medicine, supporting mood, promoting peaceful spirit and quiet mind. It is also used to clear the liver of excess heat that may cause irritability and painful eyes.
Historically, harnessing the potent nutrients locked within natural pearls was a daunting task. Traditional methods fell short in breaking down these gems to a form where their benefits could be fully absorbed by the human body.
However, thanks to recent advancements in a technique known as “levigation,” we can now process pearls to nearly nano-size particles. This method involves grinding high-grade pearls in water using a circular motion. The fine powder that becomes suspended in the water is separated from the heavier, non-suspended particles. This process is repeated until all the pearl powder is extracted, effectively separating the pearl’s core impurity (the “seed”) from the actual pearl powder. The solution with the suspended pearl is then allowed to settle, and the deposited pearl is dried. This “levigated” pearl powder is exceptionally fine and thus very easy for the human body to absorb, providing you with the maximum benefits of this precious ingredient.
Ethical and sustainable practice is at the heart of Shoku Iku. They source their pearls from suppliers who adhere to strict ethical standards. This means that during the harvesting process, mussels are protected and carefully returned to their natural habitat, ensuring the sustainability of pearl farming and the health of the ecosystem.
