Natural Hydroxyapatite –
Fluoride has been fighting cavities since the 50s. But should you really brush with something that has a poison control warning? Enter hydroxyapatite. Don’t let that scientific name fool you – hydroxyapatite is a naturally occuring mineral form of calcium apatite and is actually the main mineral that our dental enamel is made of.
Hydroxyapatite (HA) is a naturally-occurring mineral made of calcium and phosphorus. More importantly, hydroxyapatite is a building block for bones and teeth: it comprises 70-80% of the mass of your dentin and enamel.
Hydroxyapatite is the best alternative to fluoride and has been proven to provide the necessary minerals to remineralise subsurface areas of the tooth, restoring the enamel to its near natural state, without changing the composition of the enamel.
Hydroxyapatite is not new by any means, in fact, it’s one of the most-studied bio materials in the world. Back in 1970, NASA developed hydroxyapatite for astronauts whose tooth density decreased because of the lack of gravity in outer space.
In 1978, a Japanese company acquired the patent from NASA and produced the first commercial toothpaste with hydroxyapatite as the active ingredient. Since then, hydroxyapatite toothpaste has been the gold standard for oral health in Japan.
When your teeth are exposed to bacteria, they lose two essential minerals: calcium and phosphate. This is known as demineralization. Hydroxyapatite replenishes these minerals—that’s called the remineralization process. As you brush with hydroxyapatite, your teeth absorb the minerals down to the root, which enables your teeth to remineralize from the inside out.
Nano-hydroxyapatite is typically the synthetic version of hydroxyapatite. It’s engineered to be tiny so it can penetrate the openings in tooth enamel. Nanoparticles like n-HA have their benefits, but they can also pose risks to the health of people—and the environment. That’s why they’re a divisive subject for the European Union.
Micro crystalline hydroxyapatite particles are derived from all-natural bovine bone instead of being made synthetically. Despite being slightly larger than n-HA particles, a 2021 study found that micro hydroxyapatite toothpaste prevented more cavities than fluoride toothpaste. We feel that micro crystalline HAP is a safer option over nano HAP.
Organic Sea Salt: Ever wondered why dentists suggest rinsing with saltwater after a dental procedure? The alkaline nature of sea salt increases the pH balance of your mouth, creating an environment that bacteria really, really hate. The sea salt we’ve put in Grin is certified organic, so it retains more of the good stuff such as calcium, magnesium, silicon, phosphorus and iron.
Magnolia Bark Extract: Magnolia bark extract works to control oral bacteria growth and prevent the build up of tartar. This active ingredient comes from the magnolia tree which is recognised for containing several natural, compounds that function as anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and anti-allergic agent.
